The Reina-Valera Bible, first translated and published in 1569 by Casiodoro de Reina in Basel, Switzerland, after twelve years of intense work, represents the first Spanish Bible. The translation is based on the original Greek and Hebrew texts and also includes the deuterocanonical books of the Old Testament.

The widely popular and extensively used Spanish Bible underwent its first editorial revision in 1602 by Cipriano de Valera, who dedicated over twenty years of his life to these revisions and improvements. Subsequent revisions of the Reina Valera Bible in 1862, 1909, 1960, and 1995 progressively omitted more of the apocryphal books, substituting them for a translation with more modern language.

The most commonly used Bible by Spanish-speaking Christians around the world is the 1960 revision.
